Top 10 Marine Species You Can Spot While Diving in Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc isn’t only famous for its white-sand beaches and sunsets — beneath the surface lies a colorful world full of life. Whether you’re a brand-new diver or already addicted to the ocean, the marine life in Phu Quoc offers something unforgettable on every dive.
Here are 10 species you’re most likely to spot while exploring the reefs with us!
1. Clownfish (“Nemo”)
Probably the most famous little fish in the ocean! Clownfish live inside sea anemones and are always curious, making them great subjects for photos.
Where we see them: Shallow reefs, especially in the south.

2. Parrotfish
These colorful fish play a huge role in reef health — they literally create sand by eating algae off the coral.
Fun fact: A single parrotfish can produce up to 100 kg of sand per year!

3. Pufferfish
Cute, slow-moving, and extremely photogenic. You’ll often find pufferfish hovering around corals or hiding near small caves.
Remember: They inflate when stressed, so please don’t try to touch them.

4. Green Sea Turtles
Not an everyday sight — but when they appear, it’s magical. Phu Quoc waters are part of their feeding routes.
Best chances: Deeper southern sites and calm morning dives.

5. Cuttlefish
Masters of camouflage! They change color and texture in seconds.
Why divers love them: They’re curious and will often come close to inspect you.

6. Octopus
Often misunderstood, octopuses are shy but incredibly intelligent.
Where to look: Under rocks, inside holes, or blending perfectly with the reef.
Spotting one is a guaranteed “wow” moment.

7. Cleaner Shrimp
Tiny but fascinating. These shrimp run “cleaning stations,” removing parasites from fish.
Tip: Hover calmly — you might get a free manicure!

8. Porcupinefish
Similar to pufferfish but with long spines. Their big, round eyes make them look like underwater teddy bears.
We often see them: Cruising around coral blocks or hiding under ledges.

9. Butterflyfish & Angelfish
Bright, colorful, and super common — these species bring life to every reef in Phu Quoc.
Why they’re special: They always swim in pairs, making them easy to spot.

10. Blue-Spotted Stingray
A favorite among our divers! The bright blue spots make them stand out instantly on sandy bottoms.
Behavior: Usually calm and peaceful, gliding just above the seafloor.
